Sam's First Cub Scout Overnighter- Grand Canyon Council October 17-18, 2008
Sam was waiting here at the Archery range, doing a nice job listening to the rangemaster. Even though he was not in the first group he still did well. The camp had over 150 boys on this campout, well more than they were prepared for but as the Scout Moto says, "Be Prepared" the leaders did great and made it fun for the boys. Sam's group had 31 boys in it, which meant at the archery range and the BB gun range, he had to wait because they didn't have enough equipment.
Sam was now at the Blue Line--the ready line on the archery range. He was waiting for his turn to get to pick up his bow and arrow and attempt to shoot it down range. The range master did a great job in explaining to all the boys what they needed to do and the commands which were in place for safety. Sam had thought because he shot a bow and arrow before he knew what to do. He still came in with an good listening attitude.
Sam was ready to go, he listened and was now awaiting the two short whistle blasts telling him to pick up his bow and his arrow. Since he is a lefty he had to face to the left, which was a challenge for Dad (Jason), because he is a righty and learned to shoot differently.
Now, Sam was able to pick up his arrow put it in the notch on the string of the bow. He doesn't have the arm strength to pull it back all the way, so Dad helped a bit. Even then, he did nto get it down at the target. He was not upset or discouraged. Dad explained how to keep practicing at it and he would get it down to the target.
